Northern Ireland Police Chief's Riot Warning

Northern Ireland's police chief has warned officers will continue to deal with loyalist violence firmly and called for protesters to take a step back after more rioting in Belfast.

Chief Constable Matt Baggott warned that a lack of organisation in official protests was spilling over into violence on the streets.

He told a news conference in Belfast: "I want to raise some concerns that although much of the protest has been peaceful, many have been ill-disciplined, lacking in organisation and lacking in control.

"That has led in certain cases to a rapid movement into extreme violence.

"Fifty two of my colleagues have been injured, fortunately none of them seriously. But that is a price that I am not prepared to accept.

"I also have concerns that in parts of East Belfast these protests are being exploited. I am concerned that senior members of the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force) in East Belfast as individuals have been increasingly orchestrating some of this violence.

"That is utterly unacceptable and is being done for their own selfish motives. There is no excuse whatsoever for violence and we will be investigating that and taking appropriate action."

Mr Baggott said 96 people had been arrested over the violence since the start of December.

He added that of the 47 people have already been charged, a significant proportion were young people aged from 10 to 15.

Loyalist violence erupted over a decision to restrict the flying of the Union flag at Belfast City Hall.

On Sunday, Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officers came under attack again when a mob hurled steel barriers, bricks, fireworks and bottles in Castlereagh Street.

Disorder was also reported on Mountpottinger Road and Beersbridge Road, where a car was set ablaze.

A 38-year-old man is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates Court later today charged with possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, riotous behaviour and failing to remove a disguise when requested by a constable.
